I’m a UX Consultant, specialising in digital product strategy and design.

In 17 years I’ve partnered with all kinds of clients, from global behemoths to tiny startups, in a broad spectrum of sectors – including entertainment, utilities, transportation and healthcare.

I’ve designed for now and the future; for screens that fit in hands, cars or museums. Clients include Google, Toyota, Facebook, Nestle, The British Museum and eBay.

Experience

Outside of my commercial work I also teach design at undergraduate level, mostly at Loughborough University, with some guest lectures elsewhere.

Free Association

2015 – Jan 2023

I joined Free Association in NYC as a Design Director, later becoming Experience Director.

I led nimble teams of talented individuals in pursuit of successful product outcomes. My role was often directorial; teams generally comprised product designers, researchers and engineers, which I would oversee, and I was also responsible for finding and guiding additional specialists such as animators or copywriters. Hands-on output included strategy documents, workshop design and user research.

In 2018 I returned to the UK and began working with FA as a freelance strategist.

AllofUs

2012 - 2015

I joined AllofUs as Head of Visual Design in 2012 and became Creative Director in 2014.

I was responsible for providing creative leadership on projects and to the overall studio, ensuring that both the user experience and visual design was of the highest quality. Specifically I worked with UX/UI designers and researchers to shape concept strategy and led project teams both in concept and production phases.

At the time AllofUs was part of the McCann network. This was personally beneficial as we gained access to resources, projects and clients via McCann London, providing me with experiences and opportunities atypical to those usually found in a small studio.

Etc.

2005 - 2012

Before I joined the world of digital design in 2010 (at a now defunct ‘multi-platform digital storytelling studio’) I honed my craft as an illustrator – I had a weekly commission with the Independent newspaper for their politics opinion column, and regular work from a variety of print publications. I don’t miss the hustle, small budgets or bad art direction, but I retain my enthusiasm for the medium. My grounding in illustration has been vital to my career even after I (mostly) retired my Wacom tablet. The ability to sketch a complex idea and simplify it for a non-expert audience is always useful in my current field, and I’m very happy to do it.
